Physical Barriers include all barriers of a physical dimension which may result in problems and obstacles in the design/planning and implementation process for new and more flexible transport services. Physical barriers are natural obstacles such as weather conditions or topography, as well as inadequate highway infrastructure and the disparate and sparse settlement structures which make the provision of public transport very difficult. When it comes to the provision of public transport, physical barriers are often difficult to cope with but they are usually unalterable and therefore are not the central subject-matter of this research.

A dispersed settlement structure is a fundamental barrier, and it is almost impossible to offer a cost-effective supply with conventional transport services. Innovative and flexible transport solutions have the advantage that, unlike conventional regular services, they are not bound to fixed time schedules and fixed routes. Additionally, they are able to bundle different travel purposes and therefore increase vehicle capacity utilisation.
